Do you know what day today is...? Earth Day 2014.
Do you know how Earth Day got started? If not, please read on ..and then you will know the rest f the story.
The time is the 1970’s Hippies & the Flower-Child culture prevail.
The death of Jimmy Hendrix, the last Beatles album recorded and
Simon& Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water” Protest was the order of the day, mostly over the war in Vietnam.
Americans were slurping leaded gas through there big cars.
Industry belched out smoke and sludge into the air and water.
Mainstream America was oblivious to environmental concerns.
Then came a book “Silent Spring in 1962’. It raised the public awareness and concern for the environment and public health. Sold more than 5000,000 copies in 24 countries.
With that being said, a US Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson had just witnessed a massive oil spill in 1969 off the coast of California.
Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infusethat energy with an emerging public awareness about air and pollution, it would force environment protection onto the national political agenda As a result of his and others efforts , 20 million Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for healthy sustainable environment with coast to coast rallies.
Earth Day & the United States Environmental Protection Agency were born as we know it today.
The Promotional products industry strives to step on the bandwagon encouraging promotional items to be reused, recycled and reduce.
With all of this said , I strongly urge you to recycle, reuse and renew. I personally am going to promote the use of cork... Each year more than 15 billion wine corks are produced worldwide, resulting in tons of leftover cork scraps.
This particular vendor uses these remnants to make all-natual cork coaster.
I will leave you with this thought.... Drink more wine!!!
